Work That Requires a Permit

WHEN IS A PERMIT REQUIRED

A building permit is required for the following types of work:

  • New construction, structural alterations, and changes in use or occupancy
  • Swimming pools (above or below ground) that are: 24 inches or more in depth, or have a surface area of 250 square feet or more
  • Decks, floor areas, or enclosures surrounding a pool
  • Garages, carports, storage sheds, and yard buildings, except: Residential accessory structures under 200 square feet.  Entryway additions to existing doors where no horizontal dimension exceeds 7 feet
  • Decks, porches, or floor surfaces elevated 30 inches or more above grade
  • Mobile home installations and replacements
  • Roof systems
  • Window replacements only when: The opening is enlarged, or an egress window is modified


WHEN IS A PERMIT NOT REQUIRED

  • Building permits are not required for residing of a structure.
  • Re-roofing that involves no structural repairs
